European Schoolnet Conferences and Events Page
Dear colleagues,
This time I leave the welcome message to my Austrian colleague, Thomas Maier:
"My name is Thomas Maier and I have worked for European Schoolnet for
almost four years. I am responsible for the new eSchoolnet website, which has
been entirely redesigned and will be launched January in 2004. The eSchoolnet
team has thought a lot and came up with some magnificent ideas to which you
can contribute.
One of those ideas is called "Experience Counts". Teachers, administrators,
trainers, etc. provide documents, pictures, multimedia files, interviews, etc.,
what ever they find suitable, that explain how they use ICT in everyday school
life and share their experiences with other colleagues.
Another, more challenging, idea is the eSchoolnet "Hot seat". A teacher,
administrator, a trainer with expertise in a certain field takes the Hot seat
for a week, provides some background information, is ready to answer questions
in a forum and prepared for a chat with interested colleagues.
I hope we have made you curious and inspired your imagination to make learning
a road of discovery that you can walk together with colleagues from all over
Europe. If you are interested, please contact me at thomas.maier@eun.org
My best regards to all too!
Brigitte
brigitte.parry@eun.org
PS: My apologies, these newsletter are getting longer and longer. That's a
good sign for schools, a bad sign for translators!

Overview of EUN-UN Events
Three days of outstanding events aimed at schools, human rights and Information
and Communication Technologies:
On December 10, an email will be sent to registered schools by Tim Berners Lee,
the scientist who invented the world wide web, and most probably also by a United
Nations high official.
On December 11, some pupils present at the World Summit, some schools on other
continents will be able to interact with a head of State on issues related to
human rights.
On December 12, the first meeting of the Global School Networks Alliance will
take place and discuss how to be an important voice in setting the global ICT
agenda, help build cross-cultural understanding and support the implementation
of the United Nations Millennium Development Goals through the use of ICTs

A new Community is Born
All the schools that register to the World Summit activities are also invited
to a very unique world wide online community that allows them to share projects,
meet and discuss.
This is certainly the most fascinating online community we have ever seen. It
is now "inhabited" by schools from 88 countries that are put in contact
thanks to the magic of Information and Communication Technologies. We hope that
this community will give all schools many collaborative opportunities and ideas.
To facilitate exchanges we have opened forums in English, French, German, Spanish,
Italian, Dutch and Portuguese.
We will certainly think of ways to expand this network and provide schools more
chances to work together at global level.

The Enlargement of Europe
___________________________________________________
Facts Files
A group of 29 European teachers has worked with their pupils to provide you
with facts about what their country is famous for, main inventions, national
festivals, do's and don'ts for foreigners. Those facts are very interesting
but of course reflect the vision of one school. A forum is attached to those
files and you are free to express your own views!
Responsible: Brigitte and Chui Hsia

Values
A set of important values has been extracted from the charter of fundamental
rights and the new constitution proposal. In this activity, we suggest to choose
a value, define it, find examples and put it into real action on Spring day.
For instance, why not make your school a school of tolerance on Spring Day?
And why not make sure that it stays like this!
Responsible: Valentina and Brigitte http://futurum2004.eun.org
____________________________________________________
Activities
This is a set of activities that put together school contributions from old,
new member states, and candidate countries. Schools are invited to contribute
in English, French or German about Local Treasures, Discover Europe, Water Tales,
and A symbol for the enlarged Europe.
Responsible: Petru http://futurum2004.eun.org

Responsible: Petru and Brigitte http://futurum2004.eun.org
____________________________________________________
Resources
The site will provide links to other trusted sites containing information on
the following themes: art, culture, traditions, country profiles, economy, enlargement,
European citizenship, geography, history, news, and European values.
Responsible: Petru with the Spring Teachers http://futurum2004.eun.org
____________________________________________________
Spring Day at School
Spring day will be like last year, an explosion of creative European citizenship.
We will send registered schools tips on how to organise a nice Spring Day, but
it is very much up to you and your pupils to do for the best. Celebrate and
debate the enlargement with sister schools in Europe, politicians, local authorities,
parents, your community, but do it! The enlargement is a very important event
that will change the life of all European citizens; we need to talk about it.
Responsible: YOU! http://futurum2004.eun.org

Curious Finnish Students
A class of Finnish 14-15-year olds got curious about the life outside of their
country boundaries. They decided that the best way to get information about
their peers would be to ask them to respond to a survey.
This resulted in an on-line questionnaire that asks questions about school,
home, family and leisure time, as well as living in the neighborhood, and questions
about the way the youth envisage their future.
Once the survey is over, the results will be analysed by students in school
subjects like history, foreign languages, and so on. The results will be published
by students on the school's website later.
Take your time and let European youngsters get their voices heard!
