Basisschool De Regenboog is a primary school located in Ghent, Belgium.
Pierre Michiels teaches there and together with his 5th class, he organized a one-day activity dedicated to the European Day of Languages.
There are 23 pupils in his class, most of whom are Belgian, but there are also a few pupils from Turkey, Germany and Spain. They all came to school accompanied by their parents who helped them with the organisation. Children learned to introduce themselves and use basic phrases such as hello, good morning, goodbye etc. in Dutch, French, English, Spanish, German and Turkish.
The parents brought in food and they all danced, sang and played traditional games in these six languages.
Pierre Michiels, the teacher, introduced the notion of European cultural diversity by studying a large map of Europe with the children and talking about Belgium, Germany, Spain and Turkey and their cultural heritage to help the children prepare for the event.
Speaking another language does not necessarily mean that we have an additional communication tool, but it can offer more opportunities when working and studying abroad. More than 200 languages are spoken in Europe and this richness makes us proud of our common cultural heritage.
