Carmen Sammut teaches in Malta. She shares a play she wrote focusing on waste management. The play takes place in a surrealistic environment. It is meant for youngsters and its main aim is to raise consciousness towards waste separation.
Carmen says: Most of my students own a very low self esteem and this hinders them from doing progress in their academic subjects. Lately there is the tendency to introduce analytical phonics in schools. Well, I feel that they should be inserted within context and not taught on their own. It is a vision I need to defend because it seems that Malta is trying to follow England’s footsteps, that is attacking literacy through phonics and this may hinder creativity. I feel that the twenty first century should be the time to attack literacy through creativity. In fact I have a joint venture with a colleague of mine and soon a text book will be published.
Last year I wrote a book in Maltese geared for seven to nine year olds, and I must say I am very pleased with the result. I enjoy literature whether it is drama, poetry or prose. I enjoy writing song lyrics. My writing serves as a consciousness raising towards values. I feel that nowadays values are being put aside and by bringing them out by the medium of drama, their need can be easily manifested and manipulated according to the spectator.
