"Sponsorenlauf" for solidarity with tsunami victims
Esther Theiler, a member of the myEUROPE Advisory Board, teaches at Kreisschule Mutschellen, a secondary school in Switzerland. She tells us the story of how the 600 students from her school raised more than €45,000 to help the victims of the Asian tsunami.
The 38 classes from our school decided to look for sponsors willing to pay students to run. The sponsored running aimed at collecting as much money as possible to help the tsunami victims. Sponsors paid a certain amount of money for each kilometre students ran.
The idea was to cover as many kilometres as possible in order to get as much money as possible.
Each student ran about 45 minutes. Despite the bad weather, the participants covered a total distance of about 3273 km and 70,000 Swiss Francs (€45,000) were collected.
At the end of the action the total amount of money went to Glückskette (Swiss Solidarity) who took care of its distribution.
As teachers, we supported this activity by running together with our students to encourage them, or by preparing tea to warm up them. The students' families with relatives and friends also were there to support our activity.
