We are convinced of the contribution that remembrance education, linked up with conflict in the past, such as the Great War, may make towards bridging cultural and ideological gaps, valuing cultural diversity and implementing European, even global, citizenship. We warmly invite schools and colleagues to exchange opinions with us on the importance of creating awareness-making strategies in this matter.
Accepting diversity as a wealth, not a stumbling-block, may well prove to be the ultimate cornerstone towards citizenship education. Remembrance education is a long-term investment. Democracy is its guaranteed dividend.
Because darkness can never be dispelled by darkness, only by light, what humanity badly needs is to reconnoitre paths, long-term perspectives to change the face of this earth. Before all, it needs to dispose of the perverted philosophy that peace can be blackmailed as a justification for war.
This, we feel, may well be a major vocation for Europe. The hallucinating human capital that has gone to waste in our Ypres region and anywhere in our continent, brings within our reach the very instruments by which to perceive the darkest sides of human nature.
