I am Professor of Educational Technology at the Educational Technology Expertise Center (OTEC) at the Open University of the Netherlands. I am also Professor of Contact and Distance Education at the Faculty of General Sciences/Knowledge Engineering at Maastricht University. I just completed my tenure as holder of the IBM-Learning Chair 1999-2000 (International Chair in Computer Science) on the University of Gent, Belgium. Finally, I am a member of the Educational Council of the Netherlands, the advisory board for the Dutch Minister of Education.

My areas of expertise include Media-use in education, Development of teacher extensive (distance) learning materials, Use of practices for the acquisition of cognitive skills and competencies, Design and development of electronic learning and working environments, and Innovation and the use of information technology educational systems.
My personal research interests are based in the use of computer supported collaborative learning environments in higher education.

A Finnish website about the University of Helsinki. The website is an environment for Finnish teachers to learn and research in a net based web environment. Teachers can find information about the research they have done and about the courses they give.

The department of education offers bachelor and graduate courses in education and teaching: 'The Faculty of Education offers initial preparation programs for Early Childhood, Primary and Secondary school teachers, including a specialised Human Movement Degree.
