Long time ago, there were a lot of Christmas traditions in Norway. One of them is eating steamed salted and dried ribs of mutton with potatoes. This is one is still alive nowadays. The period of four weeks before Christmas Eve is the Advent. On the first Sunday in Advent, we decorate the windows with Christmas stars and candlestick. The candlestick has seven lights.
December is a busy time for all people in Norway. The women bake seven kinds of cookies and clean the house. The men slaughter a pig and do things outdoors, cut down the Christmas tree and chop wood to keep the house warm. The day before Christmas Eve we call "the little Christmas". On little Christmas we decorate the house and the Christmas tree with Santa Clauses and other Christmas decorations.
At dinner about eight o'clock on Christmas Eve day we eat porridge with a little bit butter on top of it. We also take cinnamon and sugar with it. In the evening we eat ribs and potatoes. When we have finished the meal, Santa Claus comes with presents for the children. Afterwards we open the rest of the presents lying under the Christmas tree.
