The Commission's Representations in the Member States organise a range of activities to celebrate the anniversary of the Schuman Declaration on May 9th - Europe Day - adapted to their own particular countries or regions.
On May 8 2005, Europe celebrated 60 years since the cessation of war in Europe. On 9 May it celebrates 55 years of the economic union designed to maintain that peace.
Today, the 9th of May has become a European symbol (Europe Day) which along with the single currency (the euro), the flag and the anthem, identifies the political entity of the European Union. Europe Day is the occasion for activities and festivities that bring Europe closer to its citizens and peoples of the Union closer to one another.
