Susanne Pratscher, a member of both myEUROPE and Spring Day Advisory boards, has won the biggest raffle prize at the eTwinning Conference, which took place from 14 to 16 January, in Brussels. The prize was offered by Sun Microsystems and it consists of a trip for two to the US, to attend the 2005 Worldwide Education and Research Conference, organised by Sun Microsystems, in San Francisco, California.
The launch of the eTwinning action at European level took place from 14 to 16 January 2005 in Brussels, during a conference which gathered more than 300 teachers and national and European education authorities. Several myEUROPE and Spring Day in Europe teachers were invited to attend the event and to share their experiences in running Internet-based projects in schools.
In his opening speech, Education Commissioner Ján Figel' stated that eTwinning "will provide every child in Europe with the opportunity - at some point in their schooling - to engage, exchange and learn with other children".
Our Austrian colleague, Susanne Pratscher, experienced school twinning with classes inside and outside Europe. During the conference, she presented one of her projects, which has involved her school and a counterpart from Slovenia. The project name is "European Dialogues" and it is still running, as it has had a special impact on learning more about Europe and its people.
During a conference workshop both Susanne and her friend from Slovenia, Janja Faganel, shared the project story, emphasising that a follow-up face-to-face meeting of both groups contributed to its success. In addition, they discussed interesting methods and ideas on how learning on the Net could motivate students better to become life-long learners. In other words, any Web-based projects in school might be one of the basic steps to acquiring skills needed to face the challenges of living in a global society.
