myEUROPE is a Web-based project which aims to help teachers raise their pupils' awareness of what it means to be a young citizen in Europe. By involving a network of more than 7000 schools, the diversity of Europe is brought into the classroom via the Internet, because the path to living together in Europe starts at school!
Since its launch in May 2000, the project has focused on European citizenship and intercultural education through on-line activities and classroom practice examples at primary and secondary level. During the past four years, myEUROPE has become one of the largest networks of schools in Europe. It has encouraged contacts between teachers and their classes from Member States, new Member States and Candidate Countries, involving students in collaborative educational projects and activities.
The myEUROPE Web site provides content in three languages (English, French and German), but contributions to our activities are available in all European languages. The main audience of the project are students from 5 to 20 years old, but the project also reaches out to students' parents and local communities.
What is an on-line activity?
An on-line activity is a Web-based classroom project which can take place over a day, a week, a month, or longer. Its subject is usually flexible and easily adapted to teachers' requirements, needs, expectations and the national curriculum. The myEUROPE activities focus on the European citizenship, cultural diversity, European geography and history, and the environment.
By taking part in the myEUROPE activities, teachers benefit from a valuable on-line pedagogical framework. The activities introduce and expand the concepts of European citizenship and cultural diversity, and are also designed to complement national curricula. Each activity provides:
pedagogical guidelines, to help teachers implement it in the classroom
a submission form to upload content on the website
a list of outcomes, to share valuable content with the other schools
related teaching and learning on-line resources, to help classes get more information about the activity topic.
myEUROPE activities offer suggestions to teachers to combine traditional teaching with the modern tools of communication available on the Web and to integrate new technologies across the curriculum. Like any lesson in the classroom, the activities contribute to the students' education and development by conveying knowledge and developing and strengthening positive attitudes, skills and values. The activities' outcomes provide a set of relevant examples of how to enrich and preserve our common European heritage.
Schools must register to join the myEUROPE network. By doing so, they immediately benefit from all our services: mailing list, newsletter, community and partner finding forum. In addition, our Web site gives visibility to all schools through "Inside Schools", a section which aims to give visitors an overview of the wealth of cultures, languages and countries from all corners of Europe, and of classroom and school practice.
