Liceum Ogolnoksztalcace Nr XII im. Boleslawa Chrobrego, Wroclaw, Poland
Secondary School No. XII in Wroclaw, Poland was established in 1956. First, it consisted of both primary and secondary schools. The separation took place in 1964, and from that time the school has existed as a separate unit. Comparing to other secondary schools in Wroclaw, the number of students attending has always been small (from around 200 to 750 today; aged 16-19 years old). However, this has always helped to create family atmosphere among students, and facilitate the learning process.
For the first four years of existence the school had no name; on 3rd December 1960 it was called with the name of the first Polish King - Boleslaw Chrobry. Within a year time Amelia Irena Hanzlowna - a Polish poet - wrote the school's anthem. Ten years later, a parent-teacher association established the standard. In 1997, the school's building was destroyed by flood. However, thanks to the help of several sponsors, the city authorities and the parents of students, the cellar was rebuilt and reconstructed; new classes were organised at the attic.
The school is situated only a stone's throw from the city centre and a magnificent Medieval Market Square. For many years, one of the school's main problem was the lack of sports field. The building process started in 1962 and lasted for the four following years. Both the teachers and the students worked shoulder to shoulder. They managed to clear the area of debris, built the racetrack and the rifle-range.
Students have always taken part in after-school activities. The most unforgettable circles of interest were: "The Gadabout's Association", "The Circle of Music Lovers", "The Circle of Theatre Lovers" and "The Barricade XII". Today, the wide range of after-school activities allows students to broaden their knowledge and interests. They can develop their skills in music, theatre, art, science, languages and sport. All this helps them to successfully perform within many regional, national and even international competitions.
There are around 55 teachers, whose job is not only to prepare students both for Matura exam (the final exam) and entrance exams at higher educational level, but also to teach them co-operation, rules of fair play, tolerance and responsibility. They get their students involved in any projects that may help stimulate self-development and understanding towards different nations, religions and beliefs.
The atmosphere at school creates relationships close to family ties. The graduates send their children and grandchildren back to school or come back themselves as teachers. After-lesson activities let students learn new skills, create their personality and characters.
All this wouldn't have been done if not for the devotion of the headmistress Danuta Daszkiewicz-Ordylowska. She is the second, after Czeslaw Moscicki (the first headmaster and one of the founders) long-managing headmaster. In no longer than fifteen years, has she managed to redecorate the whole building, equip the school with all the necessary facilities, establish contacts with schools from Germany, France and Great Britain and put the school into the international program SMART.
Today, the school takes the third place among the leading secondary schools in Wroclaw and is has been classified within the first seventy schools in the country.
