Pivka marks the place where our school, Osnovna sola Pivka, stands. The town got its name from the river Pivka, which runs through it. The Pivka valley is a karst world surrounded by high plateaux such as Snežnik, Javorniki and Nanos.
Our region has many karst phenomena, such as funnel-shaped holes, sink holes, underground rivers, intermittent lakes and underground caves. Underground caves are the most interesting phenomena for tourists. They are formed by rivers that flow underground. It was in this way that the river Pivka formed the world-known Cave of Postojna. There are also other caves in the vicinity: The Pivka Cave, The Otoška Cave and The Black Cave.
Intermittent lakes are another interesting sight for visitors. They appear in the autumn, during the rainy season and remain above the surface for a certain period of time. In our region Lake Petelinje stays on the surface the longest and Lake Palcje is the biggest of these lakes. Altogether, there are 27 intermittent lakes in our region. They appear only when there is a lot of rain, as there was in the autumn of the year 2000.
Some interesting sights in our region include the Castle of Postojna, tourist farms such as 'Hudicevec' with its traditional culinary specialities, the ranch 'Plama' where you can go horse-riding, The Castle Kalec, where our patriot, Miroslav Vilhar, lived and the church at Tabor, filled with beautiful frescoes. These are only a few of the sights, not to mention the natural beauty that surrounds you.
Osnovna sola Pivka is a central school with two branch schools - one in the town of Zagorje and one at Smihel. Our pupils are involved in many extra-curricular activities. We have a great basketball team and a dance group 'Pike' who have already competed in national and European competitions. We are an ECO school and we are trying to improve our children's attitudes towards the environment. Since 1999 we have been involved in Socrates Comenius school projects. In 2002 we successfully completed the project 'Bridges' with schools from Sweden, Sicily, Lithuania and Estonia. Our second project 'Eurofolk' with partners from Poland, Italy, Spain and Malta has also proven to be a great success. Besides the activities, the teacher exchanges within the projects have been an experience in themselves. You can really feel the European dimension everywhere.
Another very important project is the Spring Day event, which has become part of our school life. Here pupils and teachers have the chance to get involved in everyday European affairs and become part of the European community. Have a look at our Spring Day activities for 2003 and 2004.
