‘Simion Barnutiu’, National College Simleu Silvaniei, Romania
The "Simion Barnutiu" National College is a general education secondary school located in the North Western part of Romania in the historical region of Transylvania. It is one of the three secondary schools activating in the town of Simleu Silvaniei, ancient Dacian fortress caled by Ptolemeos Dacidava; place of birth in the Middle Age of the future Polish king Stephanus Bathory, a nice and quiet place where people are cultivating vineyards, in their free time, on the hills surrounding the city as a natural fortress.
History
This school was founded in 1919 by one of the greatest educators in the region Dr. Ioan Ossian as the first Romanian school of this county and is bearing the actual official name Colegiul National "Simion Barnutiu" since September the 1-st 2004. It has a bilingual branch, teaching the students in Romanian and Hungarian 759 students in the age range: 14-19 years old (9-th till 12-th grade) in the following areas: Informatics, Chemistry-Biology, Philology/Modern Languages and Economics. There are 7 classes on each level (five in the Romanian branch and two in the Hungarian branch) where 49 teachers are preparing the students for the final national exam (Bacalaureat) and for admission in the University.
Results
Students of our school are participating to the contests organized for several subjects. Every year they are winning prizes at the regional and national levels of these contests. In 2003 one of our students, with many prizes at the national levels, has participated to the Chemistry International Olympiad organized in Yakutia, Russia where we won the silver medal. In 2004 the same student won the gold medal at the "Medeleev contest" in Chisinau (Moldavian Republic) and the gold medal at the International Chemistry Olympiad 2004 held in Kiel (Germany).
Extracurricular activities
The school is involved in many extracurricular activities in order to provide education for the students at all levels. We can enumerate sport contests, a reader club of the school, theater, the school journals and not least the international cooperation projects in the framework of the Socrates/Comenius actions. were and are part of our daily activities with the students. Two new projects are proposed for the school year 2004/2005 (one language project -Comenius 1.2- Ways Of Celebrating The School, Town, Europe and a school project -Comenius 1.1- called Les valeurs de l'Olympisme) and we are trying to be involved in other international activities such as Minerva, Comenius 3 networks, Youth and of course Spring Day in Europe. In the next image we can see our students planting 28 yellow roses as a symbol of the 28 countries who are (or want to be) integrated in the EU.
