Knjazevac, the administrative, cultural and economic centre of the municipality, got its name after Knjaz Milos, the Serbian ruler, a long time ago in 1859. The town area was inhabited not later than 4th century A.D.
Our town
The town is situated on the western slopes of Stara planina and Tupiznica (1162 m), along the southern part of Knjazevac ravine. Three rivers named "Timok" flow through the ravine.
The municipality of Knjazevac is in Eastern Serbia in the district of Zajecar (the Timok Region). It covers an area of 1102 km2, thus being the fourth largest municipality in the Republic of Serbia.
Our school history
The first state school was founded in Knjazevac as early as 1835. It was situated opposite the church in a building, which was torn down in 1876, and after that in a building next to the church. In 1875 there were three primary schools for boys and two for girls. It has been recorded that in 1884 Knjazevac had 3,570 inhabitants, 2,874 (80%) of which were literate, and 808 of them were women. During the wars of 1912-1914, the schools stopped working. The native language teaching was re-established in October 1918.
The first larger school building was built in 1935 (the present High School building). As the number of primary schoolchildren was constantly growing, in the 1952/53 school year the High School and the Primary School exchanged their buildings. At that time there were two primary schools in the town, and since 1955 they have been united into one named "Dimitrije Todorovic - Kaplar". It has had this name ever since.
