In some European countries students replace their teachers for one day. The interim teachers prepare and run the lessons and at the end of the day they report. This could be a good opportunity for both, teachers and students, to re-consider their roles as educators and learners. This article describes what happens in Lithuania every year in October, when it is celebrated Teacher’s Day.
It is a tradition to celebrate Teacher's Day in Europe. In Lithuania it is celebrated on first Saturday of October. On this day the teachers don't work, although they come to school for observing the students' work and attending a concert performed by the senior students. For all teachers this day is a holiday while for the senior students this is a working day.
During the entire day the senior students replace school teachers for all lessons performed to all classes. This day gives newer teachers an opportunity to express themselves and understand the teacher's profession better. The teachers of the school are allowed to visit classes and watch the lessons.
Before this day the newer teachers get acquainted with the program and the material of their further lessons. They find out everything they need by interviewing the teachers in charge of every school subject. Besides, the students of the school replace not only teachers, but also the other members of the school staff: principal, caretaker, photographer and others.
