Last year, Nada Kadlecova, a teacher from the Czech Republic, discovered the ICT and its benefits. This happened during Spring Day in Europe 2003-2004 when she involved her classes in the Spotlight activities. This is her ICT story.
I am an English teacher from a small town in the north of the Czech Republic. Last school year I was recommended to have a look at the Spring Day in Europe and myEUROPE Web sites. I have not had much experience with computers but I started studying with my good friend Kate.
On the Net I discover a completely different world of teaching ideas, examples and learning resources which address to both students and teachers. For example, last year we contributed to the Spotlight activities and we won the third prize in the national competition. Another opportunity we have had was to get involved in "The Image of the Other" project.
We have started our international collaboration with a myEUROPE school from Poland. The teacher Ms Dorota Liebner was very helpful and we exchanged general questions about the history of the geography of our countries and students enjoyed a lot this concrete exchange. Another school from Poland contacted us for a further collaboration and one day we got a big envelope with letters, photos and pictures from an entire class. My students chose their pen friends according to their hobbies and answered the letters by e-mail.
We are also in contact with another school from The Netherlands. Its name is Scala College, a grammar school in Alphen aan den Rijn and Victor Borm, my Dutch counterpart plans to involve more our classes in Web-based activities, on one hand. On the other hand, students prefer both electronic and snail mail exchange, so that we are planning use both to stimulate students to learn more about other people and their cultures.
It is always like a holiday when we get letters and we spend a lesson by introducing new pen friends. I know that I am not doing anything exceptional but there are hours and hours spent in front of computer when I try to arrange all the things. We don't want to disappoint our new friends and we don't want to cut off our new friendship.
Both myEUROPE and Spring Day in Europe Web sites serve very well teachers of languages. Both Web sites provide a large range of content, from news articles to resources links which can be easily related to our needs and expectations as teachers.
